Top Myths About Driveway Sealing You May Believe

Sealing your driveway is one of the simplest and best ways to protect your driveway. Unfortunately, there are so many myths floating around about driveway sealing. We’re here to separate fact from fiction for you:

  • Myth-You Should Seal Your Driveway Every Year: Not all driveways need annual sealing. Asphalt tends to benefit from sealing every 2-3 years depending on how much weather and traffic it is exposed to. Over-sealing can actually trap moisture and accelerate damage.
  • Myth-Any Sealer Works the Same: Sealants differ in quality, composition, and performance. Some can last for only a few months and some can last for years. Using the wrong sealer can result in peeling, uneven coverage, and/or reduced protection. You should always conduct your research and determine what sealant is best for your driveway.
  • Myth-Sealers Prevent Cracks Entirely: Sealers can help slow water infiltration that worsens cracks, but they can’t stop cracking caused by settling, heavy vehicles, or poor sub-base preparation. Crack repair is a separate step in maintaining your driveway.
