What Your Driveway’s Cracks Say About Your Home’s Health

Your driveway is more than just a path that connects to your house. Your driveway can actually reveal what’s going on around and beneath your home. For example, cracks are often early warning signs of larger issues. Here’s what different types of cracks can mean:

  • Long, Straight Cracks: If you see cracks that run lengthwise or across your driveway and are long and straight, this could be a sign of some water pooling beneath the surface. The cracks could also form from improper grading or downspouts dumping water onto your driveway.
  • Hairline Cracks: Hairline cracks are thin, shallow lines that don’t spread that much. They usually mean that your asphalt is aging naturally or there’s minor temperature expansion and contraction. Hairline cracks tend to be harmless, but sealing them helps to prevent water from seeping into them and causing issues.
  • Alligator Cracks: Alligator cracks are a group of cracks that look like a reptile’s skin. They usually signal that there’s a weak base or installation, repeated heavy vehicle loads, or long-term neglect.
