When temperatures drop, your driveway becomes more than just a place to park – it becomes a safety hazard. Ice and snow buildup can turn a normal surface into a slip zone. Here’s what you can do to keep your driveway slip-free this winter:
- Use the Right De-Icer: Not all melting products are safe for your driveway. Using the wrong one can cause cracking, pitting, or long-term surface damage. Some different options include magnesium chloride for asphalt, sand for concrete, and CMA-based products which are environmentally friendly.
- Improve Drainage to Prevent Water Buildup: Standing water is your biggest enemy in winter as it can turn into a sheet of ice overnight. You should check your driveway for areas where water pools, check if your driveway is poorly angled, and see if any clogged gutters are aimed at your driveway.
- Use the Right Tools for Ice Removal: If ice does form, it’s important that you remove it safely without damaging your driveway. You should avoid using metal shovels on asphalt as they can gouge the surface. You should instead use plastic snow shovels or snow pushers.
