Protecting Your Driveway From Ice and Frost Damage

While it’s only October, it is never too early to start getting your driveway prepared to protect it from inevitable ice and frost as the temperatures start to get cooler. Here are some preventative measures you should take before winter hits:

  • Fill any Cracks and Holes: Repairing any existing damage is an essential step in preventing damage. Water will find its way into any opening it can and will make any unrepaired cracks or holes bigger causing more damage. For small cracks, you should use a crack filler. For large cracks, you’ll need a patching compound.
  • Improve Drainage Around Your Driveway: Poor drainage is a major contributor to frost damage. If water pools near the driveway, it has more opportunity to seep into the surface. A good way to improve your drainage is to clear your gutters and downspouts so that you can make sure that any runoff is directed away from your home.
  • Sealcoat Your Driveway: Sealing is arguably the most important step in winterizing your driveway. A good, high-quality sealant creates a protective barrier that prevents water from penetrating the surface.
