Rock salt is one of the most common de-icers used throughout the winter due to how cheap it is, but it is the least eco-friendly and can severely damage your driveway. Here are some eco-friendly alternatives to rock salt:
- Calcium Magnesium Acetate (CMA): CMA is made from limestone and acetic acid and is a great eco-friendly de-icer. It prevents ice from bonding to the surface which makes it easier to remove. CMA is non-corrosive and doesn’t cause harm to plants or animals.
- Sand: Sand is a simple and natural solution that doesn’t necessarily melt the ice, but improves traction which helps to reduce the risk for slips and falls.
- Beet Juice: Beet juice helps to lower the freezing point of water which helps to melt ice and snow more effectively. Beet juice mixtures are often blended with other natural salts which can boost their performance.
